How to Clean and Maintain Your Garden Furniture to Ensure they Last for Years to Come

As the warmer months roll in, your garden becomes the perfect spot to relax and entertain. But after a season of rain and perhaps a little neglect, your outdoor furniture may be in need of some TLC. Here's a simple guide to help you clean and maintain your garden furniture, so it stays looking great – not just all year-round – but for many years to come.

    1. Know Your Garden Furniture Material

    Different materials need different care:

      • Rattan/Wicker:
Vacuum regularly to remove loose dirt, cobwebs and dust. Spray with Mcklords Garden Genie Rattan Furniture Cleaner. Wipe with a damp cloth. Keep it dry to avoid mould.

      • Wood
Use a soft brush and soapy water. Avoid harsh chemicals. Re-oil once or twice a year to keep the wood nourished and prevent cracking. Alternatively, you could consider painting your wooden furniture with a good quality external paint. Ideal for giving older wooden furniture a new lease of life – and available in gorgeous colours too.
      • Metal/Cast Aluminum:
Mild detergent and water do the trick here. Watch out for rust—sand it down and touch up with paint if needed.
      • Plastic/Resin:
Clean with warm, soapy water and a sponge. For stubborn stains, use a mix of vinegar and water.

    2. Don’t Forget the Cushions

Check if your cushions have removable covers—many can go in the washing machine, but check care lables first to be sure. For non-removable covers, spot clean with fabric cleaner or a mild soap solution, then let them air dry thoroughly.

    Dealing with Mould on Cushions

If you spot mould or mildew, mix a solution of 1-part white vinegar to 3-parts water and spray it generously on the affected areas. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes, scrub gently with a soft brush or damp cloth, then rinse with clean water. Let the cushions dry completely in direct sunlight—UV rays will help kill any remaining spores.

NB - Always test the solution on a small, hidden area first.

    Preventing Mould on Cushions

Of course, if you can prevent the mould in the first place, all the better! Here are a few easy steps to stop mould in its tracks before it starts:

      • Store cushions in a dry, well-ventilated outdoor storage box when not in use—especially overnight or during wet weather.
      • Use breathable, waterproof cushion storage boxes to reduce moisture buildup.
      • Let cushions dry out completely before storing them, especially if they’ve been exposed to rain or heavy dew.
      • Spray cushions with a fabric protector that offers water and mould resistance (check the lable to ensure it’s suitable for outdoor use).
      • Flip and air out cushions regularly, even during dry spells, to discourage mould spores from settling in.

    3. Seasonal Maintenance

    Spring

    Summer

    Autumn/Winter

Deep clean and inspect for wear or damage.

Wipe down regularly to keep pollen, dust, and spills at bay.

Cover or store furniture indoors to protect from frost and rain.

    4. Quick Tips for Long Life

      • Use protective covers when not in use.
      • Store cushions in a dry place.
      • Re-tighten any screws or bolts seasonally.
      • Keep furniture on hard ground to prevent moisture damage from soil or grass.

With just a little effort, your garden furniture will stay beautiful and comfortable for many seasons to come. Enjoy!
